First, I am going to start telling you a little bit about me, so I can tell how and why I moved to the US. I was born and raise in a big city in Brazil, called São Paulo, I always studied in the same school near my house, in Brazil is common the schools have kindergarten till high school. When I was sixteen my parents and I decided that it was going to be great for me to have an experience abroad, I ended up choosing US to be my home for the next 8 months, but before that my exchange program had a weekend at a “English Camp”, that it was basically a camp that you can only speak English and it was there that I met the love of my life (at the time none of us knew that!).
My experience in US was great and I wanted to stay longer, but it was time to go back home and to get ready to choose what college I was going to attend, I needed to go, what we call in Brazil, vestibular, that is similar to the SAT, but you need to do one test for each college you want to get in. The next year, I started a Fashion Design college, that was in my city, as I told before, São Paulo is a big city, actually the biggest city in the country, so a lot of great colleges are there. I was still living at my parents’ house (not a big deal, almost all the kids in Brazil stay in their parents’ house until they get married) and on the second summer vacation of college I went to Riviera de São Lourenço, a beach city near São Paulo, with my friends, and remember the love of life that I met on “English Camp”? Yes, yes!! I haven’t seen him since then and we barely spoke, but this was about to change..
Primeiro, vou começar falando um pouco sobre mim, assim eu consigo explicar como e porque eu acabei vindo morar nos Estados Unidos. Eu nasci e vivi a minha vida toda em São Paulo Capital, para quem não conhece, uma das maiores cidades do Brasil e sempre estudei na mesma escola que ficava pertinho da onde eu morava. Quando eu tinha dezesseis anos, meus pais e eu decidimos que seria ótimo para mim, fazer um intercambio, fazer high school fora e morar em uma casa de família, eu acabei escolhendo os EUA para morar os próximos 8 meses, mas antes do intercâmbio, a agencia que iria me levar para os Estados Unidos, fez um fim de semana no “English Camp”, que é um acampamento que você só pode falar inglês, e foi lá que eu conheci o amor da minha vida (naquele momento, nenhum de nós sabíamos disso!).
Meu tempo morando fora foi incrível e eu queria ficar mais, porém estava na hora de voltar para casa e me preparar para o tão esperado e temido, vestibular! No ano seguinte, eu comecei a fazer faculdade de Design de Moda, em São Paulo mesmo. Na minha segunda férias de verão da faculdade, fui com as minhas amigas para Riviera de São Lourenço, uma cidade de praia pertinho de São Paulo, e lembram o amor da minha vida que eu encontrei no “English Camp”? Sim, sim!! Nós não tínhamos nos visto desde lá e mal tínhamos se falando nos últimos anos, mas isso estava para mudar…
We met after this 3 years at the beach and since that day, we never been a part, well… We never broke up but when we were dating for 3 years, he got a job opportunity to work in the Netherlands and at that time I was doing my Master Course, so he went to the Netherlands and I stayed in Brazil, yes, it was not the happiest love story, nobody wants to be a part of the one you love, it was really hard but we loved each other so much that we wanted to still be together, we had a long distance relationship for two years and then he came back to Brazil, actually no… He got transferred to live in US and at that time we knew that we didn’t want to be apart anymore, we were looking for possibilities for me to move to US, but as most of you know, it is not an easy country to get a visa to live and to work. At that time, I was working at Forever 21, we tried to get me transferred, it didn’t work, I started looking for courses and colleges but it was not what I wanted, I had just finished my master course and all the courses were super expensive, it was a big frustration each time we tried something but it didn’t work.
Nós nos encontramos depois de 3 anos na praia e desde aquele dia, nunca mais nos separamos, quer dizer… Nós nunca terminamos mas quando estávamos namorando a 3 anos, ele recebeu uma proposta de trabalho na Holanda, nessa época eu estava fazendo minha pós-graduação, então ele foi para lá e eu fiquei no Brasil, sim, não é a história de amor mais feliz do mundo, porque quando amamos alguém não queremos ficar nem um minuto longe da pessoa, nós sabíamos que ia ser difícil mas nosso amor era tão grande e queríamos ficar juntos, escolhemos por namorar a distância, nós ficamos longe um do outro por 2 anos, entre viagens para visitar ele e vindas dele para o Brasil. Depois desses dois anos, meu namorado foi transferido para trabalhar nos Estados Unidos, nessa época já sabíamos que não queríamos ficar mais longe um do outro, nós começamos a olhar várias possibilidades para eu conseguir me mudar para EUA também, mas como a maioria sabe, aqui é muito difícil de conseguir um visto para morar e trabalhar. Na época, eu estava trabalhando na Forever 21, tentei uma transferência no trabalho, mas não deu certo, comecei a olhar cursos e faculdades, mas nada que eu realmente queria e todos os cursos que davam o visto eram extremamente caros, tudo era realmente muito frustrante, tentávamos todas as possibilidades, mas nada dava certo.
But again, my boyfriend surprised me, and I might say it was the best surprise I could ever ask! In the end of 2016, he went to Brazil to spend Christmas and New Years with me and his family, we traveled to the Northeast of Brazil, at an island called Ilha de Comandatuba. On the New Year’s Eve the hotel that we were, it had a big party and it is common there, a couple minutes before midnight, to go to the beach (it is summer time in Brazil!), count to 10 and watch the fireworks, after that we always jumped seven little waves and each one that you jump you make a wish. When we finished to jump the waves, we stayed a little bit more at the beach just looking at the sky and thinking about our wishes, and then my boyfriend (at that time!) looked at me and said: “I want one of my wishes to come true today!”, he got in one knee and asked me to marry him, I might say, it was one of the most special moments of my life!
Mas, de novo meu namorado me surpreendeu e posso dizer que foi a melhor surpresa que eu poderia querer! No final do ano de 2016, ele foi para o Brasil para passar o Natal e o Ano Novo comigo e com a família dele, nós viajamos para o nordeste do Brasil, para a Ilha de Comandatuba, lá no hotel que ficamos, na noite do Réveillon tem um super festa e antes da meia noite vamos para a praia fazer a contagem regressiva e ver os fogos, depois sempre tenho o costume de pular as sete ondinhas e pensar nos meus pedidos e realizações para o ano que começa. Depois que pulamos as ondinhas, ficamos na praia mais um pouco olhando para o céu e pensando nas nossas realizações, foi quando o meu namorado (ainda!) olhou para mim e disse: “Quero que um dos meus desejos se realize hoje!”, foi quando ele se ajoelhou e me pediu em casamento, posso dizer que foi um dos momentos mais especiais da minha vida!
As I told before, we wanted to be together as soon as possible, we were apart for almost two years and a half, and we didn’t want to wait any longer. At first, we thought of just doing the legal marriage and then after I move to US, we figure it out if we should do a ceremony. But as you guys saw on the blog, we did get married with everything we wanted, pretty dress, ceremony and reception. It was crazy, we planned the wedding in two months, but it couldn’t be more perfect!
After we got married, I did all the paperwork to get the visa and I redid all my documents (because I changed my name, I got my husband’s last name, Leite). And one month and a half after, I finally moved to US!
Como eu falei antes, nós queríamos ficar juntos o quanto antes, nós já tínhamos ficamos 2 anos e meio separados e não queríamos ficar nem um minuto a mais separados. No primeiro momento pensamos em casar só no civil e depois que eu me mudasse para os Estados Unidos, pensaríamos se iríamos fazer uma cerimônia. Mas como vocês já viram em alguns post do blog, nós casamos com tudo que a gente queria, vestido dos sonhos, cerimônia e festa. Foi uma loucura, nós planejamos o casamento em 2 meses mas não poderia ter sido mais especial e incrível!
Depois de nos casarmos, eu comecei a fazer toda a papelada necessária para o visto e refiz todos os meus documentos (eu mudei meu nome, acrescentei o sobrenome do meu marido, Leite). E um mês e meio depois, eu finalmente me mudei para os Estados Unidos!
