Everyone is familiar with Arizona’s Grand Canyon, but many people aren’t aware of the Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon” which is formally named Providence Canyon. A 2 and a half hour drive south of Atlanta it is Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin, an amazing day trip from Atlanta and a great place to do some hiking with an amazing view!
The canyons were formed simply by poor farming practices during the 1800s and over the years, the flow of water and sand has helped create amazing pinnacles. Although the reasons for Providence Canyon’s formation weren’t exactly positive, the result is a spectacular site with beautiful canyons that are as deep as 150 feet.
Muita gente conhece o Grand Canyon no Arizona, mas poucas pessoas sabem sobre o “Little Grand Canyon” que fica aqui no estado da Georgia, que se chama Providence Canyon. A 2 horas e meia de carro ao sul de Atlanta está o Providence Canyon State Park em Lumpkin, uma day trip super legal de Atlanta e um ótimo lugar para fazer caminhadas e ainda com uma vista linda!
Os canyons foram formados por práticas agrícolas ruins durante 1800 e, ao longo dos anos, o fluxo de água e areia ajudaram a criar esse cenário maravilhoso. Embora as razões para a formação do Providence Canyon não tenham sido exatamente positivas, o resultado é um local espetacular com canyons que têm mais de 50 metros de profundidade.
There are 16 different canyons and the hike around the canyons is a pretty easy 2.5 mile loop. At the canyon floor there are a few additional spurs that you can go in and out of each canyon. I recommend wearing waterproof boots since the canyon floor is sandy and specially the hike at the bottom there is some small stream and your shoes are definitely going to get wet.
Make sure to bring some snacks and water for your hike, I didn’t see anywhere nearby to get food but there is a nice picnic area at the top of the canyon. The park is open from 7am-6pm and the only the cost is a $5 parking fee.
Existem 16 diferentes canyons e a caminhada ao redor deles é bem tranquila com 4 km no total. Na base dos canyons também existe outros trechos de caminhadas que você pode fazer indo de um canyon à outro. Eu recomendo usar sapatos a prova d’agua, especialmente se você for para a base, já que lá passam alguns riachos e o chão é de areia.
Um dica, traga alguns lanchinhos e água para a sua caminhada, eu não vi nenhum lugar próximo que vendia comida mas eles tem um lugar legal para fazer picnic no topo do canyon. O parque fica aberto das 7 da manhã às 6 da tarde e o único custo é uma taxa de estacionamento de $5.
