Travel Guide – Asheville – Brazilian Takes the World

Located in North Carolina’s scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has a unique mix of hipster coffee shops, award-winning restaurants, outdoor activities, and more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the US. Asheville was rated the #1 US travel destination by Lonely Planet in 2018, and for some reason everyone thinks Asheville is super cool (and it really is!). We went to Asheville twice now and I would definitely go back!

Localizada nas montanhas Blue Ridge da Carolina do Norte, Asheville tem uma mistura única de cafés descolados, restaurantes maravilhosos, atividades ao ar livre e mais cervejarias per capita do que em qualquer outro lugar nos EUA. Asheville foi classificado como o destino de viagem #1 nos Estados Unidos pela Lonely Planet em 2018 e, por algum motivo, todo mundo acha que Asheville é super legal (e realmente é!). Nós fomos para Asheville duas vezes e eu com certeza voltaria!

WHEN TO GO

We went during the Summer and also in the Winter time, both were great but as Asheville has tons of outdoor things to do, so I think I preferred the city during the summer time, the streets are full and there is a lot of things happening. I also heard that Asheville during the fall is beautiful because of the foliage season (October), as trees & mountains are incredibly colorful. I guess you can go any time of the year and you will have a an amazing time!

Fomos durante o verão e também no inverno, gostei bastante das duas épocas, mas como Asheville tem muito o que fazer ao ar livre, acho que prefiro a cidade no verão, as ruas são cheias e tem muita coisa acontecendo . Eu também ouvi dizer que Asheville durante o outono é linda por causa do outubro, já que as árvores e as montanhas são incrivelmente coloridas. Acho que você pode ir em qualquer época do ano e aproveitar muito!

HOW TO GET THERE

We drove from Atlanta to Asheville on our road trip, and it took us about 3 hours and a half. Asheville also has a smaller airport that can easily accommodate people who live a bit farther away. Overall, I enjoyed having a car in Asheville. Some of the places we visited were a bit too far for Uber (ex. driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and go to the Biltmore). However, if you want to go car-free, I recommend you to stay in Downtown Asheville where you have tons of things to do and you can walk to tons of places.

Dirigimos de Atlanta para Asheville, uma viagem de cerca de 3 horas e meia. Asheville também tem um aeroporto menor que se você mora mais longe às vezes vale a pena pegar um vôo ao invés de dirigir. No geral, achei bom ter um carro em Asheville. Alguns dos lugares que visitamos eram um pouco longe para ir de Uber (por exemplo, dirigindo pela Blue Ridge Parkway e ir até o Biltmore). No entanto, se você quiser ficar sem carro, recomendo que fique em Downtown Asheville, onde você tem muitas coisas para fazer e pode andar para vários lugares.

WHERE TO STAY

As I told you, we went to Asheville two times, one we stayed in West Asheville on a Airbnb and the other time we stayed in Downtown at the AC Hotel, we loved the Downtown location because we were in walking distance to so many amazing bars and restaurants. The location at West Asheville is not bad but not super walkable like Downtown, specially at night there is not a lot to do there, so my recommendation is AC Hotel or any place in Downtown.

Como eu disse para vocês, nós fomos para Asheville duas vezes, uma em que ficamos em West Asheville em um Airbnb e a outra vez em que ficamos em Downtown no AC Hotel, adoramos a localização no centro porque estávamos super perto de vários bares e restaurantes incríveis. A localização em West Asheville não é ruim, mas não tem tanta coisa como Downtown, especialmente à noite não tem muito o que fazer por lá, então minha recomendação é AC Hotel ou algum outro lugar em Downtown.

WALK AND EXPLORE DOWNTOWN

Downtown Asheville is such a cute place and always have tons of things going on, so make sure you explore this part of the city, also stop by the Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar, a super unique bookstore!

O centro de Asheville é um lugar tão fofo e sempre tem um monte de coisas acontecendo, então explore bastante essa parte da cidade, também dê uma passada no Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar, uma livraria super diferente!

WATCH ASHEVILLE’S STREET BUSKERS

You can check out some of the many fun (sometimes strange) street buskers in Downtown Asheville too. There are solo performances with guitars, violins, drums, and keyboards, or even full bands. Busking is when you play music or put on a performance of some kind in public, hoping to make a little money in tips. People dress in costumes or will make up a personal poem for you on the street. My favorite one was probably the Spoon Lady! Don’t forget to leave a tip if you enjoy the show! Asheville wouldn’t be the same without these guys.

Você pode conferir alguns dos muitos artistas de rua (divertidos e às vezes estranhos) em Downtown Asheville. Com apresentações solo com guitarras, violinos, bateria e teclado, ou mesmo bandas completas. Busking é quando você toca música ou faz algum tipo de apresentação em público, na esperança de ganhar algum dinheirinho com gorjetas. Meu favorito foi provavelmente a Spoon Lady! Não se esqueça de deixar uma gorjeta se você gostou do show! Asheville não seria a mesma sem esses artistas.

VISIT THE BILTMORE STATE

The historic Biltmore Estate is one of the most frequently suggested places to visit in Asheville. George Vanderbilt’s gigantic, hundred-year-old property is quite busy all year long. George, an heir to the Vanderbilt railroad fortune, fell in love with North Carolina and began building his property by late 1889. He decided to create a dream home surrounded by natural forests and productive farms, this 178,926 square foot mansion sits on 8000 acres, with over 250 rooms, and is America’s largest home. My favorite part was the gardens, so pretty, but the house tour gets a little boring after looking at 30 bedrooms but the house is really pretty. TIP: Make sure you buy your tickets online in advance as a lot of time they are sold out!

O histórico Biltmore Estate é um dos lugares mais sugeridos para se visitar em Asheville. A gigantesca propriedade centenária de George Vanderbilt fica bastante movimentada o ano todo. George, um herdeiro da fortuna da ferrovia Vanderbilt, se apaixonou pela Carolina do Norte e começou a construir sua propriedade no final de 1889. Ele decidiu criar uma casa de sonho cercada por florestas naturais e fazendas produtivas. Esta mansão de mais de 16.600 metros quadrados ocupa 8000 acres, com mais de 250 quartos, e é a maior casa dos Estados Unidos. Minha parte favorita foram os jardins, super bonitos, mas o passeio pela casa fica um pouco cansativo depois de olhar 30 quartos, mas a casa é realmente bem bonita. DICA: Comprar os ingressos online com antecedência, porque vários dias eles estão com os ingressos esgotados!

This Asheville tour place takes visitors all over the city, sharing a mixture of history with a large dose of fun. The tour guides are dressed up as crazy characters, LaZoom Comedy Tours and you won’t leave without lots of laughing!

DRIVE THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

Nestled between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville offers year-round access to hiking trails and exhilarating views along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway. The complete route stretches 469 miles from North Carolina to Virginia and is home to a wide range of diverse plants and animals, it’s technically part of the National Park System. Asheville is a perfect base for exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, and we spent some time cruising and stopping at some mountain lookouts.

Situado entre as montanhas Great Smoky e Blue Ridge, Asheville oferece acesso durante todo o ano a trilhas para caminhadas e vistas lindas ao longo da famosa Blue Ridge Parkway. A rota completa se estende por 754 km da Carolina do Norte à Virgínia e é o lar de uma grande variedade de plantas e animais diversos, tecnicamente faz parte do National Park System. Asheville é o lugar perfeito para explorar a Blue Ridge Parkway, então dirigimos por lá e parando em alguns mirantes para ver a vista.

DRINK SOME CRAFT BEER

Asheville is known as “Beer City USA”. Because with 26 different craft breweries in the city, and another 60 nearby, beer lovers won’t want to leave. Some of the most popular in town are Green Man, Catawba, Wicked Weed, and Lexington Avenue Brewery. About 100 local beers can be enjoyed in Asheville, and each brewery has its own unique character. From strong hoppy IPAs to dark stouts, to fruity raspberry ales, you’re bound to find something you’ll love.

Asheville é conhecida como “Beer City USA”. Porque tem mais de 26 diferentes cervejarias artesanais na cidade, e outras 60 próximas, os amantes da cerveja não vão querer ir embora. Alguma das mais populares na cidade são Green Man, Catawba, Wicked Weed, e Lexington Avenue Brewery. Cerca de 100 cervejas locais podem ser apreciadas em Asheville, e cada cervejaria tem seu próprio caráter único. De IPAs fortes a dark stouts, você com certeza vai encontrar algo que vá gostar.

WHERE TO EAT

BREAKFAST/BRUNCH

Sunny Point Café: there is always some wait time, specially during breakfast time, but so worth it! If you don’t want to wait but still want to try their delicious food, try to go around 4pm, when the restaurant is not too busy. Their Avocado Toast ($12) is the best, I literally could eat it every single day because it’s so good! Other amazing dishes are the Shrimp and Grits ($17.50), Fried Chicken and Waffle ($15) and the Bibimbap ($14)! Also order their Housemade Tangerine Soda ($3.75), it is amazing!
Early Girl Eatery: This place offers a delicious farm to table experience with a southern twist, with amazing breakfast food! They have two locations, on in Downtown and the other in West Asheville, normally the Downtown is super packed so try to go to the West location.
Trade and Lore Coffee: more like a coffee shop but they also offer so small bites, their Chai Latte is the best Chai that I ever had, soooo good! Also their biscuit are delicious!

Sunny Point Café: sempre tem bastante espera na hora do café da manhã mas vale muito a pena, caso você não queira ficar na fila mas mesmo assim querer experimentar essa comida maravilhosas, tente ir por volta das 16h quando o restaurante é mais vazio. O Avocado Toast ($12) deles é muuuito incrível, juro que comeria todos dias se me deixassem, de tão bom que é! Outros pratos super gostosos lá são Shrimp and Grits ($17.50), Fried Chicken and Waffle ($15) e o Bibimbap ($14)! Peça também o Housemade Tangerine Soda ($3.75) é bem bom!
Early Girl Eatery: este restaurante oferece uma deliciosa experiência de farm to table com um toque sulista, com uma comida de café da manhã incrível! Eles têm dois locais, um no Downtown e outro em West Asheville, normalmente o Downtown fica superlotado então tente ir no de West Asheville.
Trade and Lore Coffee: é mais um café, mas eles também oferecem alguns lanches, o Chai Latte deles é o melhor Chai que eu já tomei, é muuito bom! Além disso, os biscuits são deliciosos!

LUNCH/DINNER

Cúrate: it is an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant led by Chef Katie Button, the dishes are amazing and super high quality! Literally everything we ordered was amazing but our favorites were the Morcilla Casera ($12), the best one for sure and the Jamón Serrano Fermin ($10), also their Sangria is amazing! It’s always full so much sure you make a reservation in advance.
Strada Italiano: Strada means ‘street’ or ‘main boulevard’ in Italian. Located on a busy thoroughfare in downtown Asheville, Strada offers regional Italian cuisine, craft cocktails, tempting desserts and an extensive wine list in a cozy inviting atmosphere. For appetizers we ordered the Arrancini ($9) and for main dishes we got the Lamb Ragu, Short Rib Bolognese ($20) and the Margherita Pizza ($16), everything was super delicious.
Rhubard: from chef John Fleer, this Downtown New American on Pack Square highlights seasonal, locally sourced ingredients on its regular menu and weekly Sunday suppers where guests sit at communal tables and pass family-style plates. As the menu always change is hard to recommend the dishes but our favorites where the NS Goat Cheese Burrata ($13.50) and the NC Yellowfin Crudo ($15), maybe you are lucky to have those plates when you go because they were amazing!
Nine Mile: their cuisine consists of Caribbean inspired pasta dishes, rice dishes and an array of locally made desserts. Their food is so authentic and delicious, the plates are big so you can definitely share and order some appetizers! We got the Kingston ($12) with sautéed shrimp in a red coconut curry sauce with sautéed onions, asparagus, cauliflower, fresh basil, and cilantro and served with basmati rice.

Literalmente tudo o que pedimos estava incrível, mas nossos favoritos foram a Morcilla Casera ($12), a melhor tapa com certeza, e o Jamón Serrano Fermin ($10), a Sangria deles também é incrível! Está sempre cheio então tente fazer a reserva com antecedência.
Strada Italiano: Strada significa ‘rua’ ou ‘avenida principal’ em italiano. Localizado em uma rua movimentada no centro de Asheville, Strada oferece cozinha regional italiana, coquetéis artesanais, sobremesas incríveis e uma extensa carta de vinhos em um ambiente aconchegante e convidativo. De entrada pedimos o Arrancini ($9) e de prato principal pedimos o Lamb Ragu, Short Rib Bolognese ($20) e a Margherita Pizza ($16), tudo estava uma delícia!

Nine Mile: culinária com inspiração caribenha, com pratos de arroz, massa e uma variedade de sobremesas feitas localmente. A comida é super autêntica e deliciosa, os pratos são grandes então super dá para dividir! Pedimos o Kingston ($12), prato com camarão salteado em molho de curry de coco vermelho com cebola salteada, aspargos, couve-flor, manjericão fresco e coentro, servido com arroz basmati.

TREATS

Hole Doughnuts: probably on of the best donuts that I ever had. Hole Doughnuts is the cutest little coffee shop with amazing donuts, a must in any trip to Asheville. Everyday there is four donuts to choose from, when we went they had the Vanilla Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Toasted Almond and Pfeffernussë, The donuts are fresh-to-order and the best one for me were the Cinnamon Sugar and the Toasted Almond, soooo good!
Sunshine Sammies: delicious and huge ice cream sandwiches!
High Climate Tea Company: I can’t talk enough how much I loved this place, it is a tea shop with a super relaxing vibe and a great tea experience. If you like tea please make sure you stop at this amazing shop, our favorite tea was the Milk Oolong, so different! You can have the tea there and you also can buy to take it home!

Hole Doughnuts: provavelmente um dos melhores donuts que eu já comi. O Hole Doughnuts é um café pequeno super gostoso e com donuts maravilhosos, uma parada obrigatória para quem vai para Asheville. Todos os dias eles têm quatro opções de donuts, os que tinham quando a gente foi eram o Vanilla Glazed, Cinnamon Sugar, Toasted Almond e Pfeffernussë, Eles fazem os donuts na horas e os meus favoritos fora o Cinnamon Sugar e o Toasted Almond, muito bons!
Sunshine Sammies: deliciosos e enormes sanduíches de sorvete!
High Climate Tea Company: não dá para falar o quanto adorei esse lugar, é uma casa de chá com um clima super relaxante e uma ótima experiência para experimentar de chás. Se você gosta de chá, não deixe de passar por essa lojinha incrível, nosso chá preferido foi o Milk Oolong, tão diferente! Você pode tomar o chá lá e também comprar para levar para casa!

WHERE TO GET A DRINK

Capella on 9 Rooftop Bar & Restaurant: located at the AC Hotel, the Capella Rooftop had a gorgeous view and fantastic drink options. Also great to look the sunset while drinking some delicious cocktail, my favorite drinks were the An Effen Good Mule and the Kind of a Honey Story!
Top of the Monk: enter through the elevator door on Patton Ave., and proceed up the stairs to this cozy and super different bar. Enjoy expertly mixed cocktails while sitting on the roof-deck patio, seriously on of the best cocktails that I ever had! We got the Rickey with Strawberry & Basil and A Walk Through Napa, both so different and so amazing! TIP: Make sure your group had less than 5 people, because they don’t accept large groups.

Capella on 9 Rooftop Bar & Restaurant: localizado no topo do AC Hotel, o Capella Rooftop tem uma vista linda e opções fantásticas de drinks. Também é um ótimo lugar para ver o pôr do sol enquanto bebe um delicioso coquetel, meus drinks favoritos foram o An Effen Good Mule e o Kind of a Honey Story!
Top of the Monk: entre pela porta do elevador na Patton Ave. e suba as escadas até este bar aconchegante e super diferente. Desfrute de coquetéis mega diferentes preparados enquanto aproveita o deck na cobertura, com certeza um dos melhores drinks que eu já tomei! Pedimos o Rickey with Strawberry & Basil e o A Walk Through Napa, ambos super diferentes e incríveis! DICA: eles não aceitam grupos grandes, então é um lugar para vir em poucos amigos (menos de 5) ou em casal!
