Dinner at O-Ku Sushi Atlanta

p-10-Exterior-DaveCrawford_54_990x660 (1)

For my husband’s birthday I took him a Japanese restaurant, O-Ku, it is located at West Midtown and headed by Chef Jackie Chang. Before we went, I had heard a lot about the restaurant and as me and my husband love Japanese food, we were super excited to go there! O-Ku offers skyline views of the city, creative sushi rolls, impressively fresh ingredients and cocktails, do you need any more reasons to visit O-Ku Sushi? Chef Chang, who most recently worked as the lead chef of Umi in Buckhead, hopes to blend his traditional training with his innovative takes on the cuisine.

Like the food and beverage menus, the design and decor are a blend of sophisticated and casual, with Japanese elements such as a decorative tile mural, industrial elements including exposed brick walls and steel beams.

We wanted to try a lot of different things from the menu so we share everything we ordered. We started with the Big Eye Tuna Tartare ($16) and the Hamachi Carpaccio ($15), both were delicious and super fresh but the carpaccio was the best for us! After, we got some salmon and tuna sashimis ($3/$4 – 2 pc), Salmon Citrus nigiri ($6/pc) and Marmalade  nigiri ($5/pc), everything was so good and by eating the sashimis you can definitely see how fresh the fish is! To finish, we ordered some rolls, we got the Marilyn Mon Roll ($12) and the Black Magic ($21). If you are planning to go to O-ku, you should definitely go for the Hamachi Carpaccio and the Black Magic shushi, for us were the best ones we tried! For drinks we got the Hot Sake ($11/little bottle) and the Hibiscus Ginger Tea ($6), the tea is a great option if you don’t want to drink alcohol but you still want something different and delicious.

We liked the restaurant so much, that we went there another day when our family was in town. If you love Japanese food, O-Ku is a must to go! Great tip, every Monday and Wednesday, all sushi rolls are half price 5-7 p.m.! I hope to see you soon O-Ku!

Staying at Secrets Akumal in Riviera Maya

With the coastline full with high-end resorts, fine dining and luxury spas Riviera Maya is the ultimate getaway. As soon as you set foot on the white sand and dip into the crystal clear turquoise water, you will never want to leave!

Me and my husband decided to go to Mexico for a super special occasion, my cousin and also one of my bridesmaids, was going to get married over there! And what better opportunity than be part of this special moment, take a week off and also enjoy yourself?  We stayed at the Secrets Akumal, we choose to stay there because the wedding was at the hotel and we definitely don’t regret it!

It is an adults only hotel and also all-inclusive! The hotel is so beautiful and also more importantly, the service was wonderful.  We were greeted with champagne upon arrival and the staff made us feel right at home.  Several people have asked about the food because I guess all inclusive resorts are typically not known for their cuisine, and I have to say, the food was absolutely a highlight! The hotel has 7 restaurants and I was so impressed with each one.  Me and my husband loved the breakfast at The Market, lunch at the Seaside and I also loved the Mexican restaurant and the sushi spot, but to be honest all restaurants have amazing food, if you have time, go to each one of the restaurants. And the best thing in the end, you don’t need to pay the bill!!

The resort is truly made for relaxation. If you’re looking for adventure, they offer some excursions, snorkel and things you can do at the hotel, but honestly on the beach or by the pool is where you wanna be! The resort also has a spa that is amazing and it offers a big variety of massages.

The resort is beautiful, the food was great, but most notable for me was the impeccable service. Everyone I met at the resort, from the landscape team to the concierge were so welcoming, friendly and went above and beyond from check in to check out. I hope to see you soon Secrets Akumal!!

Early Dinner at Doraku Buckhead

A couple weeks ago, me and my husband were at the Lenox Square, here in Atlanta and we wanted to eat sushi sooo bad! We were looking at Yelp to find a nice Japanese restaurant near the mall and we found the Doraku at Buckhead! That day we had a late and big breakfast, so at 5pm we decided to have a late lunch/early dinner, when we arrived at the restaurant it had just opened, and we were glad it wasn’t full because we were way to hungry to wait! One thing that is super nice if you go to their happy hour that is every day from 5pm to 8pm you have discounts in some menu items we also got the house wine for half of the price because was Saturday happy hour!

Me and my husband share all the plates we ordered so we could try a little bit of everything. As appetizers we ordered the Edamame Hommus ($6.95), that is seasoned with roasted sesame and yuzu, served with toasted brioche, that it was so good, if you go there you should definitely try it. After we ordered a salmon hand roll ($4 on happy hour price), the Chef Selection of Sushi+ Sashimi ($31) and the White Dragon Roll ($11.95), my favorite one was the roll that combined a lot of different flavors and it was delicious, but all the food tasted great and it was super fresh! For dessert, we got the Brownie Tempura ($7.50) that is to die for, one of the best desserts I ever had!

We loved everything about Doraku, the food, the service, the decor and of course the happy hour discounts! We would come back again and hopefully soon!! If you are looking for fresh, authentic Japanese restaurant and delicious food, you should check out Doraku in Buckhead!

Food, Trips

Trip to Miami Beach

For the Labor Day weekend, me and my husband decided to enjoy the last few weeks of summer and hot weather, what better place to go than Miami Beach? For us, it is a sort flight, less than two hours, so we got plenty of time to enjoy there. We stayed at the Pestana Hotel in South Beach, which had a great location and tons of Brazilians working and staying at the hotel!

We were there to enjoy the beach and rest, not really to tourist or to explore the city, but one place that is great and worth the visit is the Wynwood Walls that has great graffiti murals, in fact, there are more than 40 walls and doors that have been painted by several well-known artists around the world like Shepard Fairey, Os Gêmeos, Invader, Kenny Scharf and many others.

One thing we always like to do in our trips is to discover new restaurants and to taste the flavors of the city. Miami has a lot of Cuban, Mexican and sea food restaurants, so we got the chance to go to some of them and I am going to put a list of my three favorites!

1.DiLido Beach Club: located at the Lincoln Road, it has a beautiful view of the ocean. It is great for lunch time, it offers fresh and delicious wraps, we ordered the Ahi Tuna Tartare and the Lemon Chicken and a fruit smoothie. The restaurant also serves salads, sea food and great cocktails.

2.Havana 1957: it is a Cuban restaurant, and they have some locations, we went to the one on the Lincoln Road where is a street with great restaurants and shops. The staff are welcome and the food is great! For appetizer, we ordered the Tostone which was delicious and for main courses, the Lechon Asado that had a lot of flavors and the Pan Con Bistec, that was ok. For drinks we got the traditional and the passion fruit mojito that were amazing! If you are thinking of having diner at Havana 1957, specially during weekends, it is better to do a reservation.

3.Suviche: it is a great ceviche and sushi restaurant and I will do a post just about this restaurant soon!
